Rates for all ship types in the dry market dipped on Oct. 13, with the rates on the four key routes averaging $21,398/day for Capesizes, down $3,918 from a day earlier, $12,782/day for Panamax, down $1,803, and $15,294/day for Handymaxes (Supramaxes), down $1,870. The supply-demand balance for Capesizes drastically loosened owing to the temporary stagnation in the long-distance transport of such cargoes as iron ores to China from Brazil. With the reduction in ex-India China-bound iron ores, medium-size ships that have unloaded coal in India have accumulated in the region and a Japanese operator-related source claimed that, "Ships are being chartered at such low prices in the Indian Ocean, thereby dragging down the entire market."
